Each check is real: the database answers a query and the protection engine protects a test script,
refreshed at most every 30 seconds. The page returns HTTP 503 while anything is down, so it can be monitored directly.

(documentation).
The desktop app's Local Standard mode protects code entirely on your machine and keeps working while the hosted service is down.
